#OccupyPolarBears Continues!

As we near the one-year mark of our #occupyPolarBears protest, we reflect on the fishiness of most humans "concern" for the planet. These young humans joining our cause gives us great hope for the future!

Many people say they want to help us penguins and the other 99% of inhabitants of the planet who are NOT destroying it, but how much is anyone actually doing to make a positive difference?

Yes, you need to stop the mega corporations from polluting the planet and from buying votes in Congress to NOT enact stricter standards. But you can start making a difference in your own homes in the meantime!

We've learned so much since we moved in to the polar bear exhibit here at Oregon Zoo. They have all the cool climate change graphics! Polar bears get all the love, we tell you.

Anyway, check out this cool series of signs, "10 Things You Can Do,"

What are YOU doing to help the planet? Are you really watching your hot water usage? Have you switched all your incandescent bulbs to more energy-efficient models? Do you REALLY turn off the lights and unplug your appliances when you're not using them?

DO IT FOR THE PENGUINS!

We hope to be able to move back to our Penguinarium soon, but we're not budging until that new filtration system is installed and ready. We're doing our part by saving millions of gallons of water every year.  How about you?

Until then, we continue to OCCUPY POLAR BEARS!

Climate Change Affects ALL Penguins!

We Humboldt penguins hail from sunny Peru, but there are penguins on every continent in the Southern Hemisphere.

It turns out even movie penguins are being affected by climate change! We just watched the trailer for Happy Feet 2, and lo and behold: ice is melting!

What can you do about it? Take steps now to reduce your carbon footprint, be more conscientious about your water usage, and support wildlife conservation initiatives!

We will continue to #occupyPolarBears until we get a new filtration system in our Penguinarium at Oregon Zoo. This new system will save millions of gallons of water from being wasted every year, plus it will keep our water cleaner and safer for us. But a massive new filtration system isn't really possible for the whole planet, so all wildlife needs your help! Do it for the penguins!

List of Demands

You humans may have noticed that the #Occupy movements have published a list of demands.
It's nice that they are getting more focused, yet again* following in the footsteps of the perspicacious and progressive penguins of the #OccupyPolarBears movement.

We have been very clear in our demand: a new filtration system in the Penguinarium at Oregon Zoo, which will save 7 million gallons of water each year.

The idea of a list of demands has us thinking, though. Perhaps we need to think bigger than our own Penguinarium. Think Global, Act Local, right?

So here it is: our penguin demands:

1. Stop wasting water, people. Water is our single greatest resource on this planet, and animals need clean water just like you do. Here are some water-conservation tips.

2. Climate change is affecting more than just polar bears. You don't think rising sea levels affect us shore birds? Well it does! So take a moment and think about what you can do to reduce your carbon footprint. If you can't think of anything, here are some ideas for you. Speaking of climate change,

3. End the media blackout! Penguins want more attention! We're cute, we're smart, and we live right by the world's oceans. Why can't we become the poster animal for climate change? Polar bears get all the attention. Even Twitter tried to shut us down!

4. Two words: More. Fish.

POWER TO THE PENGUINS!

Speak Out for Water Conservation!

Someone didn't want to hear what we have to say, because our Twitter account was suspended. Who would have imagined that a few frustrated penguins would hit such a nerve?

So for the time being, you can't follow us at @PenguinUprise on Twitter. But you can follow @polarbears (Polar Bears International) for great climate change actions, or @OurOcean (Ocean Conservancy) for updates on, well you can probably figure out it's about ocean conservancy!
Birds may have small brains, but we can figure some things out!

We will continue to speak out for clean water and water conservation. You can join us on Facebook to contribute your own ideas for how to make our planet a better place. A lot of humans are working to slow the degradation of our planet, but the few actually in control don't seem to see the importance. You can help change that!
Here are more ideas for how you can help make a positive change for the environment & wildlife.

In solidarity with the planet and everyone who works to create positive change,

The Penguins
